Hi all.
Long time no update! I usually post on my
art blog if you're interested in more recent stuff.
Anyhow, I guess I decided to do my own DA story because I'm in the mood for some retrospective journalling.
I had an old account on DA years ago, which is way too embarrassing even for me to visit at the moment (though I might attempt to redraw some pieces down the track when I have time!). I rejoined a few years ago and am really glad I did; I've learnt so much from this site and from all the amazing artists out there. When I was younger I actually used to hate going on DA sometimes because pretty much every piece I saw was infinitely better than mine. I was probably around 15/16 and often wondered if my art would ever be as good. Envy.....yeah...it's painful. But I was young and still in that phase where you just copy tutorials and experiment with everything. It's a good stage to be in because you're just soaking in all this information and learning so fast, but totally discouraging when you're producing work that seems so far below what you expect from yourself. Starting out as an artist is hard and I know this might sound cliche and predictable but really, it's just practice and in my opinion, way of thinking that allows you to progress with art.
I think everyone goes through periods of 'god my art is awful' to 'man I'm the best artist ever', but I guess what I've learnt most from DA is just how many different styles there are out there with different appeals, and how numbers don't necessarily mean quality...or your goal in life. Likewise, I don't think copying is bad when you're starting out, but I believe staying true to yourself and your vision/aesthetic is really what should set you apart from everyone else. Taking little bits of different aesthetics you like and focusing on your original ideas and developing your own style - not just copying because you want to draw exactly the same way (or if it's just popular). I mean c'mon, if you consider yourself an artist at least put in a creative effort to make it your own!
I think I've grown as an artist exponentially since becoming active on DA again, just looking at my past 2 years of progress says it all really.
Learning the technical aspects of digital drawing is one thing, but getting concepts 'right' is another. I still love some of the pieces I did 2 years ago, but hate others..which I think is a natural thing? Anyway I know I could do better on every single one of these pieces now, and could probably do even better a few years down the track.
^HMMMM yeah I could do better still
^just all round bad rendering *note to self - use lines and copics with extreme care. xD
^one of the first proper digital drawings I did.
Heh this is becoming a big spiel........but the most important thing I wanted to say was I I really appreciate my watchers for your encouragement and support - all the faves, comments etc. encourage me a lot. Oh I also appreciate all constructive criticism so feel free to suggest things next time I post something
Anyway, hope you enjoyed this semi-long post...have a great week.
